How to Create a Shot List

A successful hype reel focuses on capturing key moments and details of an event, using dynamic visuals and short interviews to convey excitement and energy

Nothing conveys energy and excitement like a good hype reel! Today, we're diving into the electrifying world of hype reel videos and how you can craft one that captures the essence of excitement and inspiration.

Planning Your Hype Reel

Planning for a hype reel is different from other types of videos because it’s driven by visuals rather than a script. Hype reels are typically reserved for events such as workshops, big events, business Christmas parties, etc. They give people a highlight reel of the best moments, allowing them to reminisce about what just took place or excite those who weren’t there to not miss out on the next one.

Steps to Creating an Engaging Hype Reel

  1. Define Your Objective, Target Audience, and Key Message: Start with the basics. Determine what you want to achieve, who your audience is, and the main message you want to convey.

  2. Identify Key Moments: Instead of writing a script, list all the key moments in the event that might be important to the viewers. This might include specific speakers, activities, the size of the space, and the location. Reviewing the event runsheet can be a great starting point.

  3. Capture the Details: Think about all the small details that will help convey the feel of being at the event—people having fun, food, branding of important customers or vendors, networking, etc. This list will become the backbone of your video, showcasing the essence of the event.

Adding Context with Vox Pops

If you need more context to what is happening, vox pops (short interviews) can be invaluable. Plan 3-5 short 1-3 question interviews with attendees to add context and share the highlights that made the event worthwhile. You can plan ahead for some of the people you want to interview, such as event speakers, organizers, key vendors, and a few general attendees.

Bringing It All Together

With this plan in mind, the next time you have an event, think about capturing a hype reel that will help remind people of the great time they had and make everyone who wasn’t there wish they were.
